Members of the House and the Senate do care about the opinions of their constituents. Take the time to tell your legislators how your faith calls you to respond to issues facing out nation. Most legislators accept letters, email, phone calls, and faxes. While emailing and faxing is quick and convenient, a letter signifies greater investment in the issue. Phone calls are possible, but you will mostly likely speak to an aide. Regardless of the method of communication you choose, remember these tips.

  • Be personal. Form letters/faxes/emails are obvious, and do not carry as much weight as personal correspondence.
  • Be concise. For written communication, use no more than one page.
  • Be informed. Know what you are talking about before you begin. Respectfully demonstrate that you understand the topic, but also ask a question. Doing so requires a response.
  • Be clear. Discuss only one topic per contact. Tell your legislator exactly what you would like her/him to do.
  • Be curious. Ask a question that invites response.
  • Be courteous. If you disagree, do so respectfully.
