This home currently has approximately eighty children with an expected increase in population with the opening of a new nursury. Duties would include providing a Christian role model for the children while helping with all the day-to-day activities, special outings, education, extra-curricular activities and disciplinary procedures. Volunteers would also work as a liaison between the Home and the sponsorship program in the United States, as well as help coordinate projects for incoming work groups. Casa is a safe place for children in crisis due to abuse, neglect or HIV/AIDS. Casa provides residential, medical and psychological care to meet the individual needs of each child. Children are cared for in homes with six or fewer children per house. Duties include: feeding babies, planning and cooking meals, bathing the children, getting them dressed, giving oral medications, taking children to doctor appointments, transporting children to school, grocery shopping, picking up medications at the pharmacy, managing behavior and providing safe boundaries. Quaker Service seeks Voluntary Staff to live and work at Quaker Cottage, a cross-community family support center situated on the side of Black Mountain, overlooking West Belfast. Quaker Cottage is a very special day center that provides care and support for disadvantaged families referred by social services. Typically the families have experienced some form of trauma in their lives or have difficulty coping with day to day living. All live in areas most affected by the conflict in Northern Ireland. Quaker Cottage aims to provide a safe and caring environment where increased self esteem, greater family understanding and cooperation, improved social and life skills, enhanced development and mutual understanding and respect are actively promoted. Volunteers will principally be involved in working with children, from 0-18 years old, using a very individualized and effective model of child care. All of these children come from areas which have experienced a high level of violence and much of the behavior that they display is negative. An attitude of tolerance and understanding is imperative. The working week is Monday to Friday and may include some early evening work. Other tasks include cooking, cleaning and minibus driving. Volunteering at Quaker Cottage can prove incredibly rewarding but it can also be physically and emotionally difficult. Requirements: Commitment to giving 100% to the children. Experience with children is helpful, love for them is essential. You should also be experienced driving a minibus with stick shift or at least willing to learn! One week in six you will be expected to prepare a meal for 10 adults and 12 children. Volunteers are provided with purpose-built accommodation and transport.

The Religious Coalition for Emergency Human Need has served clients in need in Frederick County since 1981. We have become the largest provider of emergency financial assistance in Frederick County. The Coalition is a faith based social service agency that includes a network of 90 churches. The Religious Coalition serves over 1300 families per month through a network of seven food banks. The Coalition operates the largest homeless shelter and only emergency shelter in Frederick County. Two staff positions exist - The Ministry Coordinator and the Volunteer Coordinator both based at the Religious Coalition office. Christ House is a 33-bed residential medical facility for men and women who are homeless and sick. We have several opportunities for year-long volunteers to join our staff in providing quality health care to people who otherwise would be forced to do without. Patients at Christ House are too sick to be on the streets or in a shelter, but are unable to access extended hospital care. While at Christ House, they receive treatment for a variety of medical conditions including trauma wounds, (gunshots, stabbings, etc), chronic illness (cancer, AIDS, etc), and many other on-going issues (frostbite, tuberculosis, diabetes, etc). Most patients have a dual diagnosis and are experiencing unusual complications. Patients stay at Christ House for as long as they have a medical need, the average length of stay is 47 days. During that time, these men and women receive 24-hour nursing care, social services, psychiatric care, addictions counseling, nutritious meals, structured community activities, clothing, and a safe and clean place to recuperate. When patients leave Christ House, many enter residential addictions counseling and transitional housing programs. BVS/Global Mission in Brazil seeks one or two Volunteers to help with community outreach programs of the congregations in either the Campinas (Sao Paulo) area, or the city of Rio Verde, Goias state. These outreach programs currently focus on children’s programs of educational support, such as tutoring and educational enrichment activities, and programs of Christian education linked directly to the congregational ministry. These outreaches respond to stated needs of the communities as well as the church membership. Active participation in the congregation would be expected. Both assignments would be supervised on day-to-day basis by local pastors and/or the National Directors, Marcos and Suely Inhauser, depending on location. This is an emerging ministry in which the candidates will help shape the position direction in consultation with church leaders and community voices. While there may be value in initial housing together for support and cultural entry, a decision has not yet been made whether a second worker might be assigned to a separate location after six months or so. Requirements: A degree in a related field and experience working with children would be helpful, ability to adjust to another culture and willingness to learn Portuguese language are essential. A basic knowledge of the Church of the Brethren beliefs and practices is also required.

EIRENE International Christian Service for Peace, an ecumenical volunteer and development agency, providing an alternative to the obligatory military service in Germany, seeks a Volunteer for the North and East Program. Around 50 volunteers are sent annually as part of EIRENE's North and East programs to do voluntary service on projects promoting nonviolence, justice, inter-religious dialogue, and environmental concerns in Northern Ireland, Ireland, France, Belgium, USA, Canada, Romania and Bosnia-Herzegovina. Valley Brethren-Mennonite Heritage Center, located on a 12-acre hilltop location overlooking the Shenandoah Valley, needs a Maintenance Coordinator to keep the grounds and buildings in good shape. The person will interact with volunteers and with the public. The Valley was the site of the only Brethren-Mennonite community in the Confederacy during the Civil War, and the two groups helped each other oppose slavery and war and survive the burning of the Valley by the Union Army. The Heritage Center includes three historic buildings, with more to come, and a modern Welcome Center. The center is open to the public, Wednesday-Saturday 10:00-5:00. Sanctuary of Hope Prayer and Retreat Center (SOH), located in the heart of Kansas City, Kansas, is an inner-city, inter-faith site composed of 35 acres of natural beauty to help people connect more with God, their true self and others in whatever spiritual path they are walking. Our basic task is to provide hospitality and stillness for all the groups and/or individuals who come. Our goal is that each person who comes realizes that they are the holy ground in which God dwells and they take that presence back to their home, family, neighborhood, faith communities and even the world. The core administrative team is a small faith community, living with the guests in a 100 + year old building, which seeks to live a life of prayer, hospitality and community. We are looking for another member of this core community, called the Brothers and Sisters of Peace. Volunteers should be willing to make a commitment of one year, renewable each year, to a regular prayer life, be open to working with people of all faith backgrounds, cultures and social status, and help in the serving of meals, clean-up and other chores. We desire that the volunteer would give at least 35 hours a week, depending on the number of guests using SOH. We would ask that they have a background in spirituality and religious studies, and have had some formational experiences with community. The volunteer would also be a part of the core community and the larger associate members who support the live-in staff. It is helpful for the volunteer to have computer knowledge, to be comfortable with their own self and embrace a non-violent lifestyle. We would ask that the volunteer have good health, so that they can walk the hallways, stairways and grounds, move furniture for groups using the retreat center and keep up with all areas of hospitality
