"ORGANIZING FOR PEACE" GATHERING HELPS LAY GROUNDWORK
FOR A NONVIOLENT MOVEMENT

North Manchester, IN – The weekend of March 15-17, 2002, over 110 members and friends of the Church of the Brethren, including college students from 8 universities, gathered in northern Indiana for a weekend of "Organizing for Peace." The gathering, co-sponsored by the Maryland-based Church of the Brethren-affiliated organization On Earth Peace and the Manchester College Peace Studies Institute (North Manchester, IN), was planned to motivate, connect, and inspire peacemakers to mobilize and act against the current War on Terrorism.

On Earth Peace staff-person Kim Stuckey said, "A basic goal for the weekend was to bring together peacemakers who might be feeling isolated in these times. We wanted people to find community support for their feelings and ideas of opposition to the war. We hope this support can give them the strength to act in their home communities."

Large and small group sessions, workshops, and worship and singing moved participants from analysis to vision to strategy. In a series of sessions, participants analyzed the signs of the times and explored methods for strengthening the forces of liberation and reducing the effect of forces of oppression and repression, explored allies for building a movement, and finally drafted two-year time-lines for peace action in their own work.

The inter-generational gathering included college students from Virginia, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Indiana, and California and church people from as far away as Virginia and Colorado. Topics for organized workshops included music as a tool for social change, war tax resistance, organizing local congregations or college campuses for action, and anti-racist perspectives. Saturday's lunch hour was dedicated to ‘guerilla workshops' where participants were invited to lead their own discussions about issues of interest to them– including a recent trip to Iraq, pastors doing peacemaking, how to hang banners from highway overpasses, and more.

The conference planners incorporated arts into the gathering through an art area where participants sculpted and painted, art displays, and brief "creative encounters" at the beginning of sessions where anyone could volunteer to read a poem, tell a story, sing, play fiddle. Saturday night featured a concert by social justice folk singers Charlie King and Karen Brandow. "We are trying to build the culture for an active nonviolence movement," said On Earth Peace staffmember Matt Guynn. "That means welcoming the senses, the body, the voice – calling on poets and artists and musicians and opening space for the Spirit to move."

On Sunday morning, an energetic and moving worship service sent participants back home with feelings of hope and energy. Washington, DC resident Shelly Ungemach said, "The ball has started rolling in the development of a Brethren and friends peace and justice movement. This weekend was a good reminder that there's work to be done and that we as people of faith need to get going!"

On Earth Peace, located in New Windsor, MD, is a peace education organization in the Church of the Brethren. Part of On Earth Peace's mission is to "empower people to discern the things that make for peace."

Co-sponsored by On Earth Peace and Manchester College Peace Studies Institute

Join us March 15-17, 2002, for ORGANIZING FOR PEACE – a gathering for those who want to respond actively and nonviolently to the War on Terrorism.

College students, church members, young adults, everyone is welcome!

Why this event? We want to:
  • Activate + mobilize Church of the Brethren peacemakers of different ages and locations – colleges, young adults, congregations

  • Build collaborative and supportive relationships with other peace people – members of the Church of the Brethren and friends!

  • Build skills for our social change work

  • Examine the peace work we are currently doing and plan for our next steps, both independently and together as a broader movement

Are you:
Wanting to work for justice through any occupation?
Longing for a movement that combines Spirit and Action?

Do you:
See your Christian commitment and your social justice commitment as connected?
Want to examine what's working, what could go better, and lay plans for future active nonviolence?
Want to integrate your art (poetry, music, drama) with social change organizing?

THE WEEKEND WILL INCLUDE a variety of large and small group sessions, storytelling and art-making and singing, workshops and prayer. There will be an attentiveness to the moving of the Spirit.

We hope to gather students from all six Brethren colleges and Bethany Seminary, people from Brethren congregations, and many others!

WE INVITE YOU TO FORM AN "AFFINITY GROUP" in preparing for Organizing for Peace. Affinity Groups are one way to get a lot of input and organize lots of people in nonviolent social movements. Students organizers are active on college campuses, already forming groups for action and reflection in advance of the March 15-17 gathering.

We've prepared some help sheets for you as you prepare your Affinity Group. For more information about the Affinity Group model at Organizing for Peace, and what you can do in your local group: Click here.

HOW CAN CONGREGATIONS PARTICIPATE IN ORGANIZING FOR PEACE? We invite local congregations to commission a delegation of 1-3 (or more!) people to attend Organizing for Peace. Your delegation can represent the congregation and participate in the gathering, and then bring ideas and dreams and reports back after March 17.

As your delegation prepares to participate in the event, consider using the guide for "Affinity Groups." Click here.

We are also building a list of people committed to pray for the event. Would you like to add your name to the list?

Registration costs: $25 individual, $10 student/low income/children. Registration includes three meals on Saturday and breakfast Sunday, and simple housing (church floor or church members' homes as available). (You can also pay extra to rent a dorm room at Manchester College.)

Limited assistance for travel expenses is available on a first-come first serve basis

Commitments for Peace

Participants in the Organizing for peace Conference received a bright yellow "Commitment Card" in the mail about a month after the gathering. They were invited to send in their personal commitments for peace action. Here are some of the responses we received!

I commit myself to ...

...strengthening the Juniata College Peace Studies student group and doing research on the embedded assumptions of violence in children's textbooks.
-- Cindy Megill, Juniata College

...attend weekly vigils in my town.
-- Rachel Gross, North Manchester, IN

...bumper sticker; article in church newsletter; presentation to leadership team; help congregation with the Decade to Overcome Violence
-- Randall Short, Stryker, OH

...continue to use Conversation Cards.
-- Bob Gross, North Manchester, IN

...continuing to be a voice of peace in my congregation through pastoral leadership and ecumenical outreach.
-- Jim Buckles, Richmond, IN

...meeting with affinity group members, went to DC for Peace March on April 20, giving the message at Lafayette COB this Sunday on the "Revolution of Hope", praying for the world to find peace, shared Organizing for Peace material with local peace group about strategic thinking.
-- Jessica Eller, Lafayette, IN

I attended a vigil and I accepted the interim work of being my church's peace coordinator. Wish me luck!
-- Carla Kilgore, Indianapolis, Indiana

...facilitating economic disparity workshops this summer at the Pilgrimage.
-- Shelly Ungemach, Washington, DC

(Shelly writes later: "The workshops have been really well received and are a great way to start groups thinking about systematic oppression.")

...continuing to write letters to my Senators and Representatives. I'm working my way up to an office visit. My focus at this point has been military spending.
-- Laura Kreider, Washington, DC

...participate in Colombia mobilization on April 21st; looking for a job in a peace and justice organization; planning to attend School of the Americas event in November
-- Tracy Stoddart, Elgin, IL

Since OEP conference I have hung banners with peace bible verses on them in the cafeteria. I wrote to my school newspaper because there was violent chalking directed toward the Earlham College's queer community. I have also been attending lectures given by Howard Richards on globalization and a culture of peace. You can read his thoughts on his website: www.howardri.org.
-- Sky Cunningham, Richmond, IN

...organizing for peace on an individual level, with personal contacts, friends, acquaintances, and then grow from there.
-- Sarah Huffman, Bridgewater College

...increased letter writing to editor, to email lists.
-- David A. Waas, North Manchester, IN
