Global Food Initiative and partner organizations carry out evaluation of agriculture project in Haiti (January 31, 2020)

The Global Food Initiative (GFI) director Jeff Boshart, and a member of the GFI review panel, Pat Krabacher, have traveled to Haiti for a year-end evaluation of an agriculture project carried out jointly with Eglise des Freres Haitiens and Growing Hope Globally. The evaluation is ongoing under the direction of Klebert Exceus, former Haiti disaster response coordinator for Brethren Disaster Ministries. Read more »

Annual Conference ballot for 2020 is announced (January 31, 2020)

The Annual Conference office has announced the ballot to be presented at this summer’s Conference on July 1-5 in Grand Rapids, Mich. Topping the ballot are two candidates for Annual Conference moderator-elect: Paul Liepelt and Tim McElwee. Candidates for numerous additional offices also have been announced. Read more »


Tod Bolsinger and Michael Gorman are featured resource people for 2020 Annual Conference (January 30, 2020)

Tod Bolsinger, vice president and chief of leadership formation at Fuller Seminary in Pasadena, Calif., and Michael J. Gorman, Raymond E. Brown Chair in Biblical Studies and Theology at St. Mary’s Seminary and University in Baltimore, Md., are featured resource people for Annual Conference this year. The Conference takes place July 1-5 in Grand Rapids, Mich., on the theme “God’s Adventurous Future.” Read more »


My brother’s keeper: Remembering the Haiti earthquake of January 12, 2010 (January 30, 2020)

January 12 is a date forever engraved in my heart for two reasons: first, January 12, 2007, I married the love of my life, Michaela Alphonse; second, January 12, 2010, the worst natural disaster in my time, a massive earthquake, destroyed my native country of Haiti and my people. It was the darkest hour for every Haitian everywhere. We as a people lost family members, loved ones, homes, places of worship, businesses, and most importantly hope. Read more »

Nigerian Brethren district leader and ecumenical leader Lawan Andimi has been executed by Boko Haram (January 21, 2020)

Lawan Andimi was executed by Boko Haram yesterday, Jan. 20. He was an ordained minister in Ekklesiyar Yan’uwa a Nigeria (EYN, the Church of the Brethren in Nigeria), served as EYN district secretary for the Michika area, and was chair of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) for the Michika area. EYN staff sent confirmation of his death to Brethren Disaster Ministries associate executive Roy Winter early this morning. Read more »

Puerto Rico District, Brethren Disaster Ministries identifying needs following earthquakes (January 17, 2020)

The Church of the Brethren Puerto Rico District continues to ask for prayer for those affected by earthquake aftershocks and tremors continuing daily. More than 1,200 small earthquakes have occurred in Puerto Rico since Dec. 28, 2019. Several quakes over magnitude 5.0 have caused great damage, especially in the south, with the largest being 6.4 magnitude on Tuesday, Jan. 7. Read more »


United Nations representative reports from human rights events in 2019 (January 17, 2020)

Doris Theresa Abdullah, the United Nations representative for the Church of the Brethren, has attended several human rights events on behalf of the denomination in 2019. Commenting on the need for peace and light in the world, she noted that the events highlighted many concerns including “the darkness of hate, religious intolerance, greed, racism, discrimination, bigotry, and ignorance.” Read more »

The Brethren Academy for Ministerial Leadership has updated its course listing for 2020 into 2021. Retreat gathers clergywomen from across denomination (January 16, 2020)

Church of the Brethren clergywomen gathered in retreat at the Franciscan Renewal Center in Scottsdale, Ariz., in the Phoenix area, on Jan. 6-9. The 57 women from across the denomination were led by presenter Mandy Smith on the theme, “Treasure in Clay Pots” (2 Corinthians 4:7). Read more »


LaDonna Sanders Nkosi begins as director of Intercultural Ministries (January 15, 2020)

LaDonna Sanders Nkosi has been hired by the Church of the Brethren as director of Intercultural Ministries, a staff position in Discipleship Ministries. Her first day on the job is Jan. 16. She will work remotely and from the Church of the Brethren General Offices in Elgin, Ill. Read more »


Moderator’s forum is April 18 at Elizabethtown College’s Young Center (January 14, 2020)

Annual Conference moderator Paul Mundey has announced that he will host a Moderator’s Forum this spring at the Young Center for Anabaptist and Pietist Studies at Elizabethtown (Pa.) College. The date is April 18, from 1-9 p.m. The focus is “Historical Themes Impacting Today’s Church.” Read more »
