Brethren from Dominican Republic and Spain start house churches in Europe (January 26, 2018)

In the 1990s, a wave of Dominicans began leaving their home country to look for a better life in Spain. Members of Iglesia de los Hermanos (the Church of the Brethren in the Dominican Republic) were among them. In time they established the Church of the Brethren in Spain and continue to plant new fellowships across the country. Read more »

SVMC celebrates 25 years, offers continuing education events (January 26, 2018)

The Susquehanna Valley Ministry Center (SVMC) is celebrating its 25th anniversary in 2018. “To commemorate this milestone, we will be sharing devotions on the 25th day of each month,” said an announcement. Children’s Disaster Services offers spring training workshops (January 26, 2018)

Children’s Disaster Services (CDS) is offering several training workshops for volunteers this spring, in a variety of locations across the country. CDS volunteers work at the invitation of the American Red Cross and FEMA to care for children and families affected by disaster. EDF gives grants to Brethren Disaster Ministries projects (January 26, 2018)

Brethren Disaster Ministries has directed grants from the Church of the Brethren’s Emergency Disaster Fund (EDF) to the Disaster Recovery Support Initiative and the task of developing new project sites following the 2017 hurricane and fire season. In addition, a grant has been given to assist families displaced by violence in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Read more »


GFI grants support gardens and gardeners, aquaponics, feeding program (January 26, 2018)

The Global Food Initiative (GFI) of the Church of the Brethren has made several grants in recent months. The grants support a Going to the Garden retreat, an aquaponics system in Haiti, two community gardens in Spain, and a feeding ministry in Mexico. Read more »


Ventures in Christian Discipleship offers courses to empower small churches (January 26, 2018)

The Ventures in Christian Discipleship initiative hosted at McPherson (Kan.) College offers series of courses aimed at empowering small congregations. The courses offered in coming months cover the topics of “How the Bible Came to Be the Bible,” “Revitalizing Worship Through the Arts,” and “Congregations Nurturing a Culture of Call.” Read more »

Brethren Press publishes Lenten devotional, distributes ‘Shine On’ story Bible to churches (January 13, 2018)

This year’s Lenten devotional from Brethren Press, written by Erin Matteson, is titled “Growing in God’s Garden.” The pocket-sized paperback includes daily devotions, scriptures, and prayers for Ash Wednesday, Feb. 14, through Easter Sunday, April 1. Read more »


Roxanne Aguirre to coordinate Spanish-language ministry training (January 13, 2018)

Roxanne Aguirre begins Jan. 16 as part-time coordinator of Spanish-language ministry training programs at the Brethren Academy for Ministerial Leadership. She will work from her home in central California. The academy is a ministry training partnership of Bethany Theological Seminary and the Church of the Brethren. Read more »

New units of BVS volunteers at work across US, N. Ireland, Japan (January 13, 2018)

Volunteers in the latest units of Brethren Volunteer Service (BVS) have been placed and are at work at project sites across the United States, Northern Ireland, and Japan. The volunteers in BVS orientation units 316 and 318 trained in the summer and fall of 2017. (Unit 317, which would have been a joint unit with the Brethren Revival Fellowship, was cancelled because of a lack of participants.) Read more »


EYN commissions multi-million Naira project with Bethany Seminary (January 13, 2018)

A multi-million Naira Technological Centre was dedicated and commissioned by Ekklesiyar Yan’uwa a Nigeria (EYN, the Church of the Brethren in Nigeria) president Joel S. Billi on Monday, Jan. 8, in Jos, Plateau State, Nigeria. In his address at the occasion, the president stated that the facility would not be standing today if it were not for the tremendous financial support received from brothers and sisters in America. Brethren Microfinance Bank Board of Directors is inaugurated by EYN (January 13, 2018)

A Brethren Microfinance Bank Board of Directors was inaugurated by Joel S. Billi, president of Ekklesiyar Yan’uwa a Nigeria (EYN, the Church of the Brethren in Nigeria) on Saturday, Jan. 5, at the EYN Headquarters, Kwarhi. The seven-person board is to be chaired by Eugenia L. Zoaka, and has Daniel Y. C. Mbaya as its secretary. Other members include Paul Mele Gadzama, Samuel Wiam, Sani Drmbi Zira, Rebecca S. Dali, and Joseph Yabwa. Read more »


Nigeria Crisis Response celebrates work and achievements in 2017 (January 12, 2018)

I am amazed at the end of each year when I add up and record all the work that has been done in Nigeria by the Nigeria Crisis Response, a joint effort of the Church of the Brethren with Ekklesiyar Yan’uwa a Nigeria (EYN, the Church of the Brethren in Nigeria). National Youth Conference registration opens next week (January 12, 2018)

Registration for the 2018 National Youth Conference of the Church of the Brethren opens in six days on Thursday, Jan. 18, at 6 p.m. (central time). NYC takes place at Colorado State University in Fort Collins, Colo., on July 21-26. Read more »


Ending of temporary protected status affects Haitian Brethren and their churches (January 12, 2018)

In November, the Trump administration rescinded the Temporary Protected Status (TPS) that gave protections against deportation for some 60,000 Haitians who came to the US after a massive earthquake hit their country. Today is the eighth anniversary of the earthquake that devastated Haiti on Jan. 12, 2010. Read more »
