There’s an unusual connection between the Brethren Press apparel at National Youth Conference, a recipe for chocolate cake, and a 93-year-old woman in Fort Collins, Colo.

The story started eight years ago when Brethren Press needed a local vendor for a fast turnaround on T-shirts and sweatshirts for NYC. The original vendor had messed up the order, and there was barely time for a plan B.

Jeff Lennard, director of marketing and sales for Brethren Press, managed to find Burt’s Logo Apparel, a family-owned business close to Colorado State University. Not only did Burt’s save the day, but ever since then the company has been a dependable source for the fair-trade clothing that Brethren Press produces for NYC.

The woman who took Lennard’s order back in 2010 was Anna, mother of the owner of the business. When she learned what the conference was, she exclaimed, “I’m a Dunker!” Turns out she had grown up in the Church of the Brethren.

During their conversation, she learned that Brethren Press was receiving recipe submissions for a new cookbook. She decided to submit a family recipe that had been passed down for generations. When “The New Inglenook Cookbook” was published in 2013, she was excited that Grandma Beaver’s Chocolate Cake made it in.

Fast forward to 2018. When Lennard placed his order for NYC T-shirts and sweatshirts, he asked about Anna. After being told, “Mom’s retired,” he decided to deliver a copy of the just-published “Inglenook Desserts” cookbook for the family to take to her. That’s when he learned that–in a happy coincidence–he had brought his gift just one day before her 93rd birthday.
