The American Friends Service Committee’s work is rooted in Quaker values: principally that every human being has a spark of the Divine in them and therefore should be treated with respect and dignity.

Jennifer Piper is the Interfaith Organizing Director for Immigrant Rights at the American Friends Service Committee. Her work in Colorado began in answer to immigrants asking AFSC: “Where is the Church? Do they not believe my fight is a moral fight? Do my children not deserve to be with their parents?”

  • I work to engage faith communities in dialogue and lead workshops about the immigration system we have. We also work with faith communities to create a network of sanctuary churches.
  • Practical ways people of faith can help:
    • Just about anywhere one lives in the U.S. there’s an immigrant community. Get to know them. If they are hosting events, ask what would be helpful? Childcare? Maybe help with ESL classes.
    • Justice for Immigrants has good resources.

"The Bible says we are to treat people from other nations with honor and respect. It is helpful to remember the whole world belongs to God. People who cross national borders to flee from poverty and danger today are our neighbors even if not authorized to be here."

Only Native Americans are non-immigrants in the United States; everyone else traces his or her ancestral roots to another part of the world. Scriptural references for migrants, Immigrants Among Us; Ministry to Immigrants and Refugees.

A Prayer for Immigrant Children

Loving Father,
in your infinite compassion,
we seek your divine protection for refugee children who are often alone and afraid.
Provide solace to those who have been witnesses to violence and destruction,
who have lost parents, family, friends, home, and all they cherish due to war or persecution.
Comfort them in their sorrow, and bring help in their time of need.
Show mercy to unaccompanied migrant children, too, Lord.
Reunite them with their families and loved ones.
Guide those children who are strangers in a foreign land to a place of peace and safety.
Comfort them in their sorrow, and bring help in their time of need.
Show us how we might reach out to these precious and vulnerable children.
Open our hearts to migrant and refugee children in need, so that we might see in them your own migrant Son.
Give us courage to stand up in their defense against those who would do them harm.
For this we pray through our Lord Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with you
in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever.
Amen

Orange stars were held high by an overwhelming attendance of Candlelight Vigil participants at the Church of the Brethren Annual Conference in Greensboro, N.C. in 2019, as they reached high to remember the immigrant children separated at the border. These orange stars were worn on badges throughout the conference.
