The Church of the Brethren Mission in Haiti began more than a decade ago, led by Haitian Brethren living in the United States. The first Brethren were baptized in Haiti in May 2003.

Now there are over twenty active Church of the Brethren congregations and preaching points. In 2008, the New Covenant School was established in St. Louis du Nord for pre-school through third grade, with sponsorship from First Church of the Brethren in Miami, Fla.  The Aux Plaines school receives sponsorship from the Miami Haitian Church of the Brethren in Miami, Fla.

The Church of the Brethren holds annual theological training in Haiti to assist with leadership development for the growing mission. The church’s Ministry Office also supports licensing of Haitian ministers. Six ministry candidates were licensed in 2009, and one Haitian Brethren member was ordained in 2009.

The Church of the Brethren responded energetically to a recent cholera epidemic through the distribution of water filters and by digging wells. Brethren Disaster Ministries led Church of the Brethren assistance after hurricanes Gustav, Hanna, and Ike and the January 2010 earthquake, all of which caused major devastation in an already impoverished country.
