The Challenge
God's earth is facing many challenges, but one of the most daunting and dangerous is global warming. Already the planet has heated up enough to melt 100 of the 150 glaciers in Glacier National Park; to affect the health of vast areas of coral reefs; and to cause storms to be more violent and more frequent. Turn Down the Heat is a cool way to educate your congregation about global warming and to invite them to take action at the same time.
The Response
The program works like this: on a given Sunday, everyone in your congregation who can do so finds another way besides driving a car to come to worship. They choose to walk, bike, share a ride, or take public transportation, where this is available. Once at church, the total miles that people didn't drive that day is added up and the amount of CO2 that kept out of the atmosphere is tallied. Generally, every mile we drive puts a pound of CO2 into the air. So if 20 families that normally drove 5 miles roundtrip to worship didn't drive their cars that day, the atmosphere would be saved 100 pounds of CO2. Cool, huh?!
The Program
The Turn Down the Heat campaign includes: a promotional skit; a educational bulletin insert on reducing CO2 emissions; the One Earth, One Challenge poster; To Do List post-it note; Our Fair Share: Car Use flyer; and a chart to list the CO2 savings on Turn Down the Heat Sunday.
