The Church of the Brethren General Board is the primary ministry arm of the Church of the Brethren Annual Conference, the denomination's highest elected authority. The General Board's ministries demonstrate Brethren beliefs and values to the world through word and deed.
General Board ministries include congregational life ministries; Brethren Volunteer Service; publishing and communications; youth and young adult ministries; serving pastors and districts; global partnerships in Nigeria, Sudan, and the Dominican Republic; and peace, justice, and ecological advocacy. The Board maintains a Washington, D.C. office; has a disaster response network of coordinators, workers, and child care providers ready to respond at a moment's notice; offers refugee resettlement services and ships millions worth of material aid for places in need abroad each year for denominational ministries as well as Church World Service, Interchurch Medical Assistance, Lutheran World Relief, and other agencies.
Formed in 1947 by the Annual Conference, the General Board is headquartered at the Church of the Brethren General Offices in Elgin, Ill. It also has offices and a conference and service center in New Windsor, Md.; an office in Geneva, Switzerland; and field staff placed throughout the United States, in the Dominican Republic, in Brazil, and in Nigeria.
