Dear Sisters and Brothers,

Has God given your congregation something to say to your community about violence? Will you provide spiritual leadership to bring people of faith together in your area to pray for God's help to reduce violence and build peace?

The Church of the Brethren, through the leadership of the Brethren Witness/Washington Office and On Earth Peace, is calling on its congregations to organize prayer events as part of the World Council of Churches' International Day of Prayer for Peace, September 21st.

Churches are invited to plan local prayer meetings, vigil or other events which focus on concerns about violence in their own community and the world, and which lift up God's promise of shalom and healing for all people.

My name is Mimi Copp and I have been hired to assist, support and encourage local congregations to be a part of this effort. The goal is to have at least forty public prayer meetings on or around September 21, 2007, with the hope that at least half of those events will be co-sponsored with ecumenical or interfaith partners.

Currently, there are 34 Brethren communities who are participating and an additional 58 discerning participation. Would your congregation like to join this effort and hold some type of prayer service? If so, here are a few ways to get started:

It is our hope that people of faith will take this day as a catalyst to plan and carry out a public day of prayer for peace. In doing so, faith communities will have the opportunity to talk together about violence and conflicts at every level: In their families, in their neighborhoods, on their streets, in their houses of worship, in their cities. Participants will ask God for vision and insight about how to address violence in their community, laying the groundwork for further faithful engagement and collaboration to overcome evil with good (Rom 12:21). We hope you will join in!

Peace be with you,
Mimi Copp
