The figures for the 2005 Appropriations bill are in and reveal that funding for the Environmental Protection Agency has been cut by 3%, roughly $277 million, to approximately $8.08 billion. One of the agency’s big winners was the National Park Service who received a $90 million increase in funding, to $2.35 billion. The Bureau of Indian Affairs, responsible for 55.7 million acres of land, received funds totaling $2.33 billion, a $29 million increase. Those not fairing as well in the bill were the Bureau of Land Management, losing $137 million, and the agency’s State and Tribal Assistance Grants. The grants, that aim to assist communities in clean water and sewage infrastructure maintenance, were cut by $273 million, to $3.6 billion. Funding for the agency’s Superfund program, that is responsible for significant environmental cleanups, remained the same at $1.26 billion.

As Christian disciples and stewards of God’s creation, we find that it is important to maintain the integrity of this god-given planet not only for its sake, but also as it sustains life for all of God’s children. At a time when forests are chopped down, oceans over-fished, air and water polluted, global temperature is on the rise, natural habitats destroyed and endangered species fading into extinction it is important to voice our concern. Contacting our government officials and urging them to work to protect the environment is just one of the many ways that can make positive changes in our world. Below you will find links to more information about current environmental issues and legislation.
“Planet earth is in danger. The ecological crisis that threatens the survival of life on earth is evident now not only to professional biologists, botanists, environmental scientists, but to all. Awareness grows that humanity is facing a global crisis.”
