| NOAC Begins
With a call to worship that invited all into the light of God's love, Ralph Detrick of Elizabethtown, Pa., officially opened the eighth National Older Adult Conference. Quote: The ABC slogan “Lighten Up Brethren” lends itself to more than one meaning. 𠆍on’t get your shorts in a knot, laugh a little more,’ is one of them.” Sermon Summary Kathy Reid, pinch hitting at Monday night’s worship with very little notice, pointed out that studies show that grandparents have an even greater influence on children’s moral development than parents. Reid, the executive director of the Association of Brethren Caregivers, called to mind the many lessons she learned from her Grandmother Goering. ȁShe told me to remember as I read my Bible that the Apostle Paul did not know women very well!” Her grandmother was plagued her life long with poor eyesight, and she feared that this would inhibit her participation in public worship. As a result every morning, having risen at 3 a.m. to bake the bread she would also recite biblical passages such as Psalm 23 and some of the literally hundreds of hymns she had intentionally memorized to remain part of the church community. As she woke smelling the baking bread and hearing the songs, Reid said, “I was assured that I was loved by her and by God. My Grandmother literally walked in the light.” Building on the story of Nicodemas’ visit to Jesus by light as well as Isaiah 60:1-3, she challenged us to walk in the light despite the darkness we find ourselves in. Recounting the staggering statistics of the number of dead, American and Iraqi, in the current war, as well as those killed and displaced in Sudan, along with the horrific statistics about children and abuse, she nevertheless called the congregation to Lighten Up. Receiving God’s light and reflecting God’s light creates a double exposure she said, which is important because in the end, “…it’s not important what we own, or what car we drive, but how much we love, how much we live, how much we walk in the light, and how much we are lit up by the love of God.” |
