National Youth Conference is the largest gathering of youth - and one of the largest conferences of any kind - in the Church of the Brethren. It is held every four years. This year it is July 16-21 at Colorado State University in Fort Collins, Colo., the fourth straight time it has been held at that site.

Part of the denomination for nearly half a century, NYC is five days of worship, recreation, music, workshops, small groups, service projects, fellowship, and fun, with more than 4,000 other senior high youth, advisors, and staff.

The theme for NYC 2002 is "...For Such a Time as This," based on Esther 4:14. In the book of Esther, Esther was the queen of Persia. On the advice of a counselor, the king ordered the annihilation of the Jews, not knowing that his own wife was Hebrew. Only by petitioning the king could she save her people, but entering the king's presence without being summoned was punishable by death.

"While our own difficulties might not be as far-reaching as Esther's," the NYC theme explanation says, "we still encounter situations that challenge our faith. Yet regardless of what is going on around us or what our culture tells us to do, God has given us a responsibility to seek God's guidance and then act."
