| Weather: Partly cloudy and humid after a hazy and cool morning; highs in the low 80s.
Schedule Highlights: Arrivals and registration; opening celebration featuring speaker Paul Mundey; ice cream social. Opening celebration: The worship service in Lake Junaluska's venerable, 2,000-seat Stuart Auditorium began with rich singing of favorite old hymns. Worship leaders Paul and Donna Forbes Steiner guided the congregation through several litanies and scriptures, and several Brethren shared stories about times of transition in their life journeys. Speaker Paul Mundey, senior pastor of the Frederick (Md.) congregation, spoke on "Fire In My Bones!" In his own passionate style, he talked about the need for passion in life if we are to run the race. He compared our weariness on the journey with Jeremiah's challenges, lifting up the energy that still burned in Jeremiah. Mundey urged the audience to choose their "yardsticks" wisely in evaluating their lives, to adapt to challenge, to get curious about everything, and to never lose sight of the fixed point--Jesus Christ--in the midst of change. "Passion never comes to life unless we lose our life in a cause greater than our own," Mundey said. "We can only receive passion from above." Other news and notes: All six National Older Adult gatherings to date have been held at the Lake Junaluska Assembly, and the seventh will be there as well--Sept. 6-10, 2004.... Video team David Sollenberger, Larry Glick, and Chris Brown presented the first of the popular NOAC News video updates Monday night, including a "devotional jive" and an interview with the NOAC Bear.... The opening night ice cream social was again a big hit, as NOAC participants packed a dining hall on campus for the free scoops sponsored by the Fellowship of Brethren Homes.... A 2.6-mile long trail around the lake was a popular destination for some participants. |
