SERVING ONE ANOTHER

A wealth of service projects and service-related events took place during Conference, such as school kits, the Un-luncheon, an Emergency Response/Service Ministries insight session, and a blood drive.

Tuesday's junior high youth activities included creating school kits for children in foreign countries. A large box holding the school kits in the Emergency Response/Service Ministries (ER/SM) booth in the exhibit hall was almost filled. Church World Service (CWS) sponsored the activity and will distribute these kits to those in need.

Sponsored by Brethren Witness, a unique luncheon occurred at noon. Instead of serving lunch to the ticket holders of the meal, the money was donated to the General Board's Global Food Crisis Fund. Over the designated lunch time, slides and stories were shared dealing with the December 2001 Church of the Brethren delegation to Iraq.

CWS also sponsored an insight session, "Emergency Response in Today's World: Partners in Help and Hope." Rick Augsburger, director of the CWS Emergency Response program, presented the session. He discussed three main actions that the program is currently dealing with: Afghanistan rehabilitation, responses to Sept. 11, and the South Africa food crisis.

A blood drive started on Sunday and continued through Tuesday. More than 250 pints of blood had been collected through Tuesday afternoon.

On Monday afternoon, single adults traveled to the Wayside Christian Mission soup kitchen. Most of the adults helped in preparing food for that evening's dinner, while some washed the dishes from lunch.
