Mel and Betty Myers of Bridgewater, Va., enjoy Lake Junaluska Assembly's "Rose Walk" by the lake.

Weather: Partly sunny, highs in the 80s
Highlights: Registration, getting acquainted and re-acquainted, browsing bookstores, opening worship celebration, video "tour" of the Lake Junaluska campus (as well as touring on foot or by tram), ice cream social presented by Fellowship of Brethren Homes.
Today's quote: "We are continuing to grow, we are bearing fruit, we are people living a green and growing life." -- NOAC co-coordinator Carl Myers during a worship skit.

Jimmy Ross speaks on "More than Leaves and Shade."

Worship: Retired Brethren pastor Jimmy Ross opened by joking about his dark pin-stiped suit and tie, saying he wasn't sure what to wear, but he brought it along, so he was going to wear it. Then he said he was going to get comfortable, and took off the coat and tie, joking "That's as far as I'm going!", before launching into his message.

He urged participants to go far in their faith, however, saying "Leaves and shade are no substitute for fruit. We must bear fruit." He said older adults don't have to "sit in their rocking chairs" but can changes society's perception of aging.

He pointed to the importance of fruitfulness throughout the Scriptures, and said Brethren can't just rest on their pedigree. "God doesn't want to hear about your roots; God wants to see your fruits--of righteousness."

Singers Craig Collins, Everett Blackwell, and Forrest McEntire of the Mill Creek Church of the Brethren, Tryon, N.C., brought gospel sounds to opening worship.
