EIGHT WAYS TO GET INVOLVED IN MISSION
(and energize yourself and your congregation)
  1. Focus on a mission field for a year, i.e. Nigeria, Sudan, Dominican Republic. Pray for that person or persons, send greeting cards on their birthday or for a holiday, read the missions newsletters from that area, and support the mission financially.
  2. Learn about mission. Add a one-month segment on mission to your church school progam each year. Invite missionaries to come and share their stories. Request mission materials available for study from the Office of Global Mission Partnerships.
  3. Encourage your youth group to begin a correspondence relationship with a volunteer in Brethren Volunteer Service (BVS). Learn about what they are doing and the challenges they face. Create some opportunity for the youth so share with the congregation what they are learning.
  4. Revive the 2¢ a Meal campaign in your church to support the Global Food Crisis Fund, or generate your own fund-raising ideas focusing on hunger issues.
  5. Use the Mission Offering emphasis materials for a special mission focus ever October. These materials, worship aids, mission stories, and other resources to help the congregation focus on mission, are mailed to congregations in September. whether or not your congregation participates in the offering, the materials are valuable resources about the church's mission in the world.
  6. Incorporate the learnings and inspiring stories from local outreach efforts into congregational life. Experiences and stories from local service and outreach encourage those involved and also challenge and inspire others. Use them in your church newsletter, children's stories, and sermons. Help the congregation to share in the excitement and celebratory events as well as the challenging and heart-touching moments.
  7. Participate in a disaster response, or develop a fund raising project to generate support for the Emergency Disaster Fund. Many congregations and districts have started annual auctions or other events that have become meaningful social and spiritual gatherings centering around our faith-prompted desire to serve those in need.
  8. Use a relief package project to engage members of all ages. Packing Gift of the Heart kits, school kits, and other aid packages involves a wider segment of the congregation and offers a memorable and tangible sense of connection with the recipients.
