Planned giving has been an important part of the stewardship program of the Church of the Brethren for over 50 years. Persons like Stewart Kauffman, Don Stern, Dale Minnich and Jim Replogle have been quietly working through the years with individual donors helping them to understand the joys and the complexities of planned giving.

Today, planned giving arrangements and direct gifts represent a substantial and growing portion of the annual income of the General Board and its ministries thanks to the generosity of many generations of Brethren stewards.

This brochure highlights the two stewardship services of the General Board--Financial Resource Counseling and Gift Planning. A form is available with this brochure that can put you in touch with a Financial Resource Counselor in your area to answer any questions you may have about ways to give, what needs support and your next steps.

Giving Through Your Will

Americans are well-known for volunteering their time and other resources for the benefit of causes in which they believe. As a result, all our lives are enriched.

Many people also choose to include their charitable interests in their long-range financial planning. Making an ultimate charitable gift can go hand-in-hand with preserving economic security for one's self and loved ones, thanks to many available methods of planning.

The will is one of the most popular vehicles for making long-range gifts. For each multimillion-dollar charitable bequest you've read about, countless smaller ones are arranged by people of all means, in all walks of life. Indeed, the economic stability of non-profit causes of all types has been built largely upon charitable bequests.

This booklet outlines some of the many ways in which you might consider including a charitable gift in your will or other estate plans. Forms are available in this booklet to help you in your preliminary preparations for meeting with your professional advisors.

How to Make a Will that Works

Some estate plans are more effective than others. What the most effective plans have in common, however, is a well-thought-out will that works in concert with other estate planning tools.

This booklet offers general information that may be helpful as you plan for the long-term distribution of your property to family, friends and charitable interests. You will also find a number of commonly asked questions about making and revising wills. Your will is just one part of an effective estate plan--but a vitally important part.
