Brethren value community, and cherish ways of drawing people in the Christian family closer together. Relationship and dialog are central to the denomination. The General Board fosters this feeling of connectedness through publications, people, and policies.
The monthly magazine Messenger is the denomination's flagship publication, sharing news, features, editorials, updates, and other information on Brethren and issues affecting the church. Newsline provides regular electronic updates as stories and events unfold, while Agenda provides resources and information for church leaders.
Some General Board staff are located in cities and towns across the country to better stay in touch with members. Congregational Life Teams lead this effort, helping to maintain direct connections with the 23 districts and the congregations within them.
On the East Coast, the Church of the Brethren Washington Office encourages conversation between church members and their congressional representatives, and the New Windsor Conference Center provides quiet but modern facilities for a variety of groups to hold retreats or carry out business.
The denomination is also active ecumenically, led by the General Board's general secretary, in organizations including the World and National Council of Churches. The Committee on Interchurch Relations oversees ecumenical involvement.
While striving to keep growing closer to God, the General Board also works to keep Brethren growing closer to each other. |
