901. Bellefonte, Pennsylvania
CentrePeace seeks to mend relationships between inmates and their communities through Restorative Justice. Our main program involving BVS workers is the Project Restore, part of which is a Used Household and Furniture Outlet Sale open to the public. This operates with the hands-on help of County jail “inmate-trainees” (about 12 at present) and material donations from the public.. Our trainees are inmates granted work release status by the jail. We provide a respectful working atmosphere, training in job skills, and in conflict resolution and other social skills. We also provide mentoring for the return to the outside world. We provide respect and caring to volunteers, trainees, and the public. Our work keeps people out of prison and hundreds of tons of usable items out of the landfills every year. We seek an Assistant to work with staff, volunteers, and inmate-trainees on pick-ups and deliveries, woodwork, pricing, displaying, and cashiering in the salesroom. Depending on skills and interest, other work areas could include teaching chair-caning, teaching conflict resolution to inmates and members of the public at CentrePeace, office work, editing newsletters, and much more. U.S. Citizen BVSer’s can be visitors and teachers in the local state prison if over 21. Requirements: Reliable, readiness to take responsibility, open-mindedness, flexibility, self-motivation, able to relate to others, positive and non-judgmental attitude, conscientiousness, ability to work in a loose environment, valid driver’s license.
