The Brethren Witness/Washington Office is a ministry of the General Board of the Church of the Brethren. This program seeks to resource and call to action the larger church in relation to issues of peace, justice and the global community. The Brethren Witness/Washington Office uses volunteers as Legislative Associates and as Program Associates for one or two year assignments. Duties include active participation with Capitol Hill working groups specific to office determined areas of focus; writing; editing and promoting resource material in relation to various issues; integrating Church of the Brethren policy statements into written and oral communications with membership, congregations and districts; website and electronic resource development; nonviolence organizing; Faith Expedition planning and organizing; general office duties; and acting as host to visiting Brethren and other faith communities and representatives to the DC area. The Junction, a community relations organization seeking to create understanding and healing through reconciliation-based work, serving as a hub and resource provider for local organizations to carry out peace building efforts, seeks a Projects and Outreach Officer. Tasks include facilitating/co-facilitating local, national, and international groups using The Junction to learn more about the conflict in Northern Ireland and education towards peace-building; helping with daily administrative and reception duties for the center; research on international models of good practice with peace building/education efforts; outreach; public relations; delivery of programs; production of written material; website design and maintenance; and participation in residentials. The Chiapas Peace House receives Volunteers to train and orient them to social justice and peace issues of the conflictive region. After a period of one to three months the volunteer selects a project through a range of not-profit organizations in Chiapas. The nature of the work depends on the skills and interests of the volunteer and the needs of the NGO. Placements include women’s issues, indigenous weaving cooperative, human rights and mediation, media, workshops and theater for women, photography, work with street children, agriculture, medicinal herbs and women’s health. Requirements: One to three months previous Latin America experience, conversational Spanish, good physical condition, willing to live in community setting, interpersonal communication skills, knowledge of historical and political history of the region preferred.

The National Campaign for a Peace Tax Fund is a non-profit organization established to pass the Religious Freedom Peace Tax Fund Bill in Congress. This bill would allow taxpayers who are conscientiously opposed to any participation in war to pay their taxes into a special fund to be used for non-military purposes only. NCTPF advocates for a Peace Tax Fund by direct lobbying and organizing grassroots support for this legislation through our website, newsletter, action alerts, local activist network, and network of endorsing organizations. NCTPF seeks a volunteer to work as the Outreach/Development Assistant to provide program and administrative assistance to the two full time staff. Program responsibilities, which comprise of about half of the job description, are flexible and could include grant writing, lobbying, public speaking/travel, writing and editing for newsletter and website, designing outreach materials, coordinating with local organizers, designing web-based campaigns, and distributing e-mail action alerts. Administrative responsibilities (other half of the job description) are less flexible and include data entry, answering the phone, filling literature orders, and other administrative tasks as they arise. Requirements: A basic understanding of conscientious objection and sympathy for those who feel they cannot cooperate with a system contrary to their beliefs, basic computer skills, interest and ability to learn new computer programs, strong organizational skills, and ability to work both independently and with others.

The Finger Lake Restorative Justice Center has been working since 1999 to redress harm, restore peace, and build safe communities through education, advocacy, and implementation of restorative justice principles and practices in criminal justice systems, schools and other settings throughout western New York. Restorative Justice is a process whereby the parties with a stake in an offense come together to resolve collectively how to deal with the aftermath of the offense and its implications for the future. The Center is a 501c3 nonprofit that trains volunteers to conduct restorative justice circles and conferences and educates the public about humane approaches to resolving conflict. We are seeking a Restorative Justice Facilitator to assist the Executive Director in handling program responsibilities, volunteer supervision, strategic planning, organizational matters and office duties. The Europe Region of the World Student Christian Federation, a global fellowship of Christian students committed to dialogue, ecumenism, social justice and peace, seeks a Publications Intern and/or Central European Subregion Coordinator, to work in the Regional Office. Tasks for the Publications Intern include: editing and copy-editing texts for the region's publications, fundraising for the publications, managing subscriptions, advertisements and distribution, bookkeeping and handling of the publication’s bank account(s), and participation in WSCF events. Tasks for the CESR coordinator include networking (visiting the movements in Central Europe), participation in the CESR governing board, overseeing preparation of two annual seminars and the publication of the annual anthology, general administration and fundraising (grant writing, bookkeeping, managing bank account), public relations, and cooperation with the language and leadership training program in Eastern and South Eastern Europe. The D.C. Employment Justice Center (EJC) is seeking a Policy Associate to join our team. The EJC is a small nonprofit organization located in the heart of Washington, D.C., that assists low-wage workers with their employment-related problems. We take on issues through a combination of direct legal services, legislative advocacy, and community organizing and education. The Associate will spend most of his/her time engaged in advocacy and organizing, while also supporting our legal service work. The Associate will have the opportunity to do a wide variety of “meaty” work, from meeting with community members and D.C. Council members, to drafting testimony, to do client intakes, to attending rallies and legislative hearings. Since the EJC opened in September 2000, we’ve been able to assist more than 8000 workers, and through our efforts, workers have gained over $3 million in back wages and other employment benefits. We also have advocated successfully for a number of improvements to the D.C. Code, with governs workplace conditions. Requirements: Ability to work with a variety of people from differing backgrounds, strong research and writing skills, excellent organizational skills to manage multiple projects, patience and perseverance, good attention to detail, flexibility and a cooperative spirit, and a commitment to working for social justice. Spanish language skills are a definite plus, though not a requirement.

North Carolina Choices For Youth, is an educational organization devoted to helping young people find and choose lives on the path of peace and service rather than violence and force. We seek a Community Organizer with strong administrative skills. This intern will network with other organizations serving youth, particularly in parts of the state where military recruiting is strong, distribute materials at high schools, connecting with high school students and staff; table at college fairs and at other youth focused venues; assist in the leadership and development of the youth peace club network that is currently being built, work with the committee to develop a materials distribution plan and distribute materials throughout the state. Formed in early 2005, NCCY's mission is to: a) help young people find civilian opportunities for adventure, service, training and jobs, b) work to dispel myths and misinformation about joining the military, c) challenge young people to consider whether participation in war would be consistent with their deepest beliefs, and d) give guidance for documenting conscientious objection to military service. Although our present focus is on opportunities in central North Carolina, our mission extends to the eastern and western parts of the state, and to the southeast region and beyond. So that we can continue expanding and updating our materials, we would like someone who can research the web and network with local agencies to find and document new opportunities for internships, develop and maintain a database for updated youth opportunities, contacts, etc. The intern should expect to perform routine office tasks such as responding to emails and phone calls, and provide office support to an advisory committee. The intern will meet regularly with the NCCY committee, and on a weekly basis with a supervisor and other committee members. Requirements: A college degree preferred or experience, good oral and written communication and research skills, able to easily make connections with youth, in particular, as well as parents, high school officials, and various other individuals and groups. Ability to maintain simple databases and use Office suite software is expected. Must have a valid drivers license and be comfortable traveling to various parts of the state. Co-Directors teach weekly English conversation and translation classes ranging from basic abilities to advanced topics. Peace activities are promoted through classes, Peace Park tours and Hibakusha (A-bomb survivor) story scheduling, and by attending a variety of community based Peace activities. Co-Directors oversee financial and correspondence operations including updating the website, presenting the Director’s Report for Rijikai (Board of Directors) monthly meeting, and participate in a wide variety of community activities and events. Requirements: Maturity, two-year commitment, concern for peace, computer and other office skills, and basic repair knowledge are prerequisites. Stamina and good health are helpful - the location of the center requires considerable walking and bike riding. Interest in the Japanese language and culture, the ability to speak and write clearly and to work with others required. A college degree helpful but not essential. a married couple preferred. The selection for this position is usually made eight months or more in advance of the spring available date. The selection for the spring 2009 opening will take place in 2008.
