Volunteer opportunities abound at the New Windsor Conference Center, a ministry of the Church of the Brethren. The Conference Center is in a peaceful, rural setting with the theme of “A quiet place to get things done.” On a regular basis, we need Volunteer Hosts/Hostesses to help coordinate and provide hospitality services to guests. This position involves guest check-in, arranging conference rooms, making/serving coffee/tea, banquet service, preparation and monitoring of meal tickets, keeping track of schedules and report preparation. Requirements: Maturity, strong attention to detail, personable, reliable, strong customer service values.

Brethren Volunteer Service is seeking (A) Assistant to the Coordinator of Orientation. This position provides ongoing leadership during orientation; assists with preparation for and follow-up after BVS orientation; assists in BVS interpretation; participates in BVS Team; writes press releases; and assists in general office tasks. Requirements: 21 years old, prior assignment in BVS, able to work with a diverse group of people, organizing/writing/financial abilities, photography skills, flexibility, able to maintain confidentiality, computer knowledge, Brethren background helpful, valid driver’s license. (B) Assistant to the Director of BVS. This position assists the Director with the overall administration of BVS. Duties: maintain a support system for BVSers; conduct the in-service retreats; publish a newsletter; coordinate AmeriCorps program; assist in placement of volunteers during orientation; other administrative duties as needed; participate in BVS Team. Requirements: Maturity, ability to relate to different persons, ability to represent BVS and the Church of the Brethren, ability to maintain confidentiality, prior BVS assignment, good communication skills, computer knowledge, writing/editing/photography skills helpful, valid driver’s license. (C) Assistant for Recruitment. This position assists with the promotion of BVS. Duties include recruitment trips to colleges, national, district, and church events. Responds to verbal and written inquiries; maintains contact with applicants. Also responsible for advertising through display and print advertisements; coordinating use of promotional materials; participating in BVS Team. Requirements: Work experience - preferably in office situation, computer knowledge, good communication skills, valid driver’s license, ability to maintain confidentiality, experience with advertising a plus, Brethren background helpful, prior BVS assignment.

The Association of Brethren Caregivers seeks (A) Program Assistant in the area of health care public advocacy. The program assistant will work directly with the Executive Director within the program area of whole person health. Duties include coordinating health care advocacy campaigns with other ecumenical groups, tracking public policy discussions and legislation, development of congregational resources and raising awareness within the church about health related issues. Requirements: Maturity, initiative, good judgment, high motivation, collegiality, flexible, awareness of personal limitations, college degree preferred, computer proficiency, knowledge of Church of the Brethren denomination. (B) Program Assistant to develop resources related to the Church’s response to persons impacted by domestic violence and substance abuse.The program assistant will work directly with the Director of Family and Older Adult Ministry. Duties include research information and existing resources about the topics, develop new resources for pastors, deacons, other caregivers and congregations to minister to persons dealing with domestic violence and substance abuse, and create workshops and other training materials related to those areas. Requirements: Strong interest or prior work experience in the areas of domestic violence and/or substance abuse, self-starter, inquisitive, creative, strong organizational, writing and computer skills Knowledge of Church of the Brethren values helpful.

General Board Computer Operations seeks a Computer Technical Support Volunteer to provide technology support to denominational programs of the Church of the Brethren. Duties include daily rotation of backup tapes for local area network and IBM i5; installation and configuration of personal computer hardware and software; coaching users on use of office productivity applications; analyzing and solving user problems with hardware and software; attending Information Services planning meetings; occasional travel to user site; other duties as assigned. Requirements: Installation and configuration of personal computer hardware and software knowledge; prior work with Microsoft Windows OS (XP or later); familiarity with Microsoft Office applications; ability to work well under pressure while maintaining a sense of humor; physically able to work with a variety of computer equipment; good communication skills; AA degree or equivalent experience.

Duties include processing archival records; keyboarding from manuscripts and dictation; responding to requests for information; filling book orders, and filing. Requirements: High school or GED, computer skills, able to lift boxes weighing up to 40 lbs., detail-oriented. College work and interest in Brethren history helpful, but not required.

The Brethren Service Center seeks a Maintenance Assistant to perform general maintenance duties. This may include mowing and grounds work, preventative maintenance on mechanical equipment, and general building repairs and maintenance. One or more trade skills (i.e. plumbing, electrical, HVACR) are helpful but not required. Requirements: Valid driver’s license, able to lift up to 100 lbs, able to work in extreme conditions (hot, cold, dusty environment).

EIRENE International Christian Service for Peace, an ecumenical volunteer and development agency, providing an alternative to the obligatory military service in Germany, seeks a Volunteer for the North and East Program. Around 50 volunteers are sent annually as part of EIRENE’s North and East programs to do voluntary service on projects promoting nonviolence, justice, inter-religious dialogue and environmental concerns in Northern Ireland, Ireland, France, Belguim, USA, Canada, Romania and Bosnia-Herzegovina. This office volunteer will be responsible for volunteer accompaniment and adminstrative tasks in the North and East Program such as: processing inquiries, distribution of volunteers’ newsletters, address administration, preparation of financial transfers, helping organize the five different kinds of EIRENE seminars for volunteers before, during and after their terms of service, helping to host guests and other tasks as needed in the EIRENE headquarters, and participation in various EIRENE meetings and commissions. Requirements: Previous experience in or at least openness to the ecumenical movement, background in the voluntary service sector helpful, outgoing personality, ability to multi-task, good knowledge of German or willingness to improve at start of term, computer skills (word processing, data base, internet), office/administration knowledge/experience, previous group work or pedagogical experience helpful.

2026. Harrisonburg, Virginia

Valley Brethren-Mennonite Heritage Center, located on a 12-acre hilltop location overlooking the Shenandoah Valley, needs a Maintenance Coordinator to keep the grounds and buildings in good shape. The person will interact with volunteers and with the public. The Valley was the site of the only Brethren-Mennonite community in the Confederacy during the Civil War, and the two groups helped each other oppose slavery and war and survive the burning of the Valley by the Union Army. The Heritage Center includes three historic buildings, with more to come, and a modern Welcome Center. The center is open to the public, Wednesday-Saturday 10:00-5:00. Requirements: Skills and experience in maintenance and groundskeeping, high school diploma, good physical condition.

2027. Wenatchee, Washington   new projects

The Stewardship Formation and Education Office of the Church of the Brethren General Board seeks a Program Volunteer to help fulfill it’s vision of increasing meaningful congregational relationships and providing resources that focus on a whole-life, faith based understanding of stewardship. The 2006 Annual Conference requested more congregational resources in the area of stewardship education, and assigned that work to the General Board staff. Two “dispersed staff” addressing this request work in Wenatchee, Washington and so the project is located in and near these field offices. Wenatchee is nestled in the eastern foothills of the Cascade Mountains, on the banks of the Columbia River, with year-round recreational activities, two Brethren congregations, and a variety of agri-business (fruit orchards) settings. Requirements: Interest in and passion for whole-life stewardship; computer skills (word processing, e-mail, power point and graphic arts); public relation skills; ability to be a “Brethren presence”; mature; self-motivator and creative thinker.

2028. Elgin, Illinois   new projects

The Church of the Brethren Credit Union is seeking a Member Services Representative to assist Credit Union Staff with a wide array of projects and on going operations. The volunteer will work directly with the Director of Operations to implement new projects and services that will enable the Credit Union to be a full-service financial institution for the Church of the Brethren denomination. The volunteer may also assist in developing marketing strategies to grow the Credit Union membership. The volunteer will also assist in teller and loan processing functions. Requirements: Interested individuals should have strong organization, writing and communication skills; be detailed oriented; computer literate; motivated; and have values consistent with the Church of the Brethren. Finance, business, accounting and/or credit union experience a plus.
