The Tri-City Homeless Coalition at Sunrise Village Shelter provides transitional shelter and comprehensive support services to homeless families with children , and single adults. Tri-City Homeless Coalition’s mission is to identify and coordinate ways to service the homeless by helping them toward the goals of independence, self-help, and being able to seek, enter and maintain stable housing.Fremont has an excellent climate and is near San Jose, Oakland, and San Francisco. Volunteers have a van for transportation to work and around town, and a great three-bedroom apartment complete with laundry facilities, dishwasher and a DVD player. Dress code is casual. (A) Case Managers excellent social work, clinical psychology and counseling experience. Work directly with clients as service providers, referrals to resources, problem solving, financial management, informal counseling, conflict resolution, housing aid, attend staff meetings, office work. May also need to perform shelter monitor duties and possibly some data entry. Will learn counseling and crisis intervention skills. Requirements: 21 years old, B.A. (helpful if in related field), computer knowledge helpful, should be open to working with issues of homelessness and social work, sensitivity. (B) Shelter Monitor maintain facility (cleaning), answer phones, enforce shelter rules, informally counsel clients, attend staff meetings, office work, possibly some data entry. Requirements: 19 years old, flexibility, sensitivity, computer skills helpful.

People Lacking Ample Shelter and Employment (PLASE) needs (A) Advocacy Counselor to address homeless residents’ needs and to assist staff in assuring the needs of homeless citizens and addressing, as well as assisting in the smooth operation of the transitional housing facility. Duties may include orienting new residents; conducting intakes; helping clients access information, support and counseling; food preparation and/or food purchase for resident’s meals; conducting case management; advocacy. Requirements: Dedication to clients’ needs and social justice, ability to empathize, flexibility, some human service training is helpful. (B) Maintenance Assistant to assist its maintenance person in various areas, to include picking up donations, basic upkeep of buildings, painting, lock repair, etc., working with volunteer groups on clean-up, repair, garden and projects. The Emmaus Community, part of a 50+ year old worldwide movement of communities offering a home and work to the homeless, seeks a Volunteer to play an active role in this community of 45 men, women and couples, as well as with its recycling projects (e.g. furniture, clothing, metal, paper). Tasks include working alongside and animation of the companions, possibly being in charge of one of the clothing sorting/shops, other duties are flexible according to the skills and interests of the volunteer. The Catholic Worker House is looking for Resident Volunteers for a volunteer run hospitality house providing a safe place for four families who need temporary housing. A hot lunch and second clothing closet are open to the public four times a week. Duties include cooking; household maintenance; interviewing and counseling guest families, producing a monthly newsletter, light office work, picking up and sorting donations, other duties as necessary. Samaritan House of Atlanta is comprised of two core programs: Cafe 458 (our life stabilization program) and The Edge (our employment readiness program). Samaritan House also manages Atlanta Community Voice Mail, which offers free and low-cost voice mail numbers to people in transition, and the MARTA Half-Fare Program, which offers half-priced MARTA tokens and cards to agencies serving the homeless population. We are seek full-time Volunteers for both programs. Cafe 458 has been praised by former President Jimmy Carter as a place where homeless men and women can receive a hug, a warm meal, and retain their dignity as human beings. Cafe 458 provides life stabilization services to homeless men and women struggling with addiction issues, mental health concerns, and severe physical disabilities. Our work at Cafe 458 is enhanced by the help of over 300 dedicated volunteers who assist with meal preparation, serve guests, and manage our clothing closet. Duties include intake, interviews, advocacy for guests, food preparation, recruitment and management of volunteers. The EDGE....Earning Dignity Gaining Employment provides support to homeless job seekers. Services offered at The EDGE range from the basic (showers and toiletry items, clothes for interviewing, storage facilities, and a hearty morning breakfast) to the comprehensive (access to a telephone, free Community Voice Mail, mailing address, resume development, Internet job searching, mock-interview workshops, job boards, employment counseling, and goal-setting sessions). The EDGE is managed by a skilled and experienced staff, in addition to full-time volunteers. Duties include employment counseling, volunteer management, guest advocacy, meal preparation, recruitment and management of part-time volunteers. Requirements: 21 years of age, good interpersonal communication skills, ability to work unsupervised, respectful of other’s backgrounds and beliefs, flexibility, ability to adapt to community living, self confidence and a passion for service.

La Puente Home serves Colorado’s San Luis Valley by providing emergency, shelter, food services, advocacy, and transitional assistance for the homeless and community members in crisis. Programs also support the influx of migrant farm workers that live and work in the San Luis Valley during harvest season. The Harvest for Health Department of the Capital Area Food Bank works to improve community food security through their From the Ground Up education programs and CSA farm. This position is looking for a Volunteer to teach and assist in various education programs centering on local food systems, nutrition and environmental education. Christ House is a 33-bed residential medical facility for men and women who are homeless and sick. We have several opportunities for year-long volunteers to join our staff in providing quality health care to people who otherwise would be forced to do without. Patients at Christ House are too sick to be on the streets or in a shelter, but are unable to access extended hospital care. While at Christ House, they receive treatment for a variety of medical conditions including trauma wounds, (gunshots, stabbings, etc), chronic illness (cancer, AIDS, etc), and many other on-going issues (frostbite, tuberculosis, diabetes, etc). Most patients have a dual diagnosis and are experiencing unusual complications. Patients stay at Christ House for as long as they have a medical need, the average length of stay is 47 days. During that time, these men and women receive 24-hour nursing care, social services, psychiatric care, addictions counseling, nutritious meals, structured community activities, clothing, and a safe and clean place to recuperate. When patients leave Christ House, many enter residential addictions counseling and transitional housing programs. Positions include Staff Nurse, Nursing Assistant, Community Builder, Generalist Volunteer and Case Management Assistant. Requirements: College degree preferred, desire to work closely with people who are homeless, valid driver’s license, other requirements depending on volunteer position.

Su Casa Catholic Worker is situated a primarily African American and Latino neighborhood on Chicago’s south side. Su Casa’s mission is threefold: we provide hospitality and a healing environment for homeless Latino families; we partner with our neighbors to make our community a better place to live; and we engage in education and action related to issues of social justice. In the Catholic Worker tradition, we have a vision of simple, non-violent, environmentally sustainable living. Volunteers at Su Casa would help with house management, which involves welcoming visitors, coordinating volunteer groups, accepting donations, providing childcare, and being present to our guests. In addition, each volunteer has their own roles and area of responsibility. Volunteers usually help with a combination of two of the following areas: Hospitality, Food, Family Activities, Part-Time Volunteer Coordinator, Maintenance, Gardening, Outreach and Communications. These roles are flexible according to the skills and interests of the volunteer. Spanish speaking skills are helpful but not required.
