Trees for Life is a people-to-people grassroots movement. It demonstrates that in helping each other, we can unleash extraordinary power that impacts our lives. Trees for Life provides tools of empowerment in the areas of education, health and environment. The international office services as a resource center for providing such tools and technologies to third world countries. Trees for Life began with a vision followed by one person who helped others grow fruit trees. It has evolved into a global movement in which more than three million people have participated in a wide variety of projects to serve the needs of their communities. The office has a friendly, informal atmosphere of “relaxed intensity”. There are currently six full-time and one part-time staff. We come from different religious and personal philosophies and have good camaraderie and fellowship. Possible areas of work include writing/editing, graphic arts, building maintenance, website development, general office assistant and other tasks. Requirements: Passion for service, desire to learn and grow, flexibility, ability to work as part of a team, knowledge of self, ability to give and take constructive criticism, sense of personal responsibility, willingness to try new things.

Pesticide Action Network North America (PANNA) works to replace pesticide use with ecologically sound and socially just alternatives. As one of five Pesticide Action Network (PAN) Regional Centers worldwide, we link local and international consumer, labor, health, human rights, environment, and agricultural groups into an international citizen’s action network.This network challenges the global proliferation of pesticides, defends basic rights to health and environmental quality, and works to ensure the transition to a just and viable society. Panna seeks a Program Assistant. The volunteers are principally responsible for assisting the program staff, and secondarily with general administration. The volunteer’s responsibilities emphasize, but are not limited to, helping in one to three programs with communications (correspondence, calls, email, etc), event and project coordination, research, training others, and media outreach. Requirements: Well organized person who excels at maintaining systems, databases and records, and finding answers to complex questions; enjoys meeting and interacting with people from different cultures and economic levels; can manage multiple tasks, deadlines and events with good nature and skill; is supportive of PANNA’s mission. Superior skills on Macintosh computers, accurate typing, and experience and confidence with office machinery (copiers, postage meters, phone systems, inc). Confidence in public speaking and group decision-making are very helpful. Additional languages, especially Spanish are desirable. College degree or similar experience.

The Church of the Brethren and Trees in partnership with the Pastoral Social of Huehuetenango seek a Project Assistant. Together with a local Guatemalan, the volunteer will co-coordinate a village fuel-efficient stove and home water catchment system project. Duties include organizing meetings, building materials and transportation; learning from villagers hands-on techniques; working with townspeople and clergy. Requirements: Basic Spanish with desire to learn indigenous language - Mam, good organizational and interpersonal skills, previous experience and knowledge of political and social history of Guatemala, good physical health, sense of humor, interest in perma-culture and appropriate technology preferred.

Germanwatch, a non-profit north-south initiative engaged in directing German political policy towards sustainability (motto: "to change the north so that the south can survive"), striving for a political framework to combat global warming, for a fair world trading regime, and increased socially responsible investment, seeks a Program Assistant. The main field of work would be in the global warming program (climate responsibility campaign). Duties include co-organizing campaign events and expert meetings, writing/translating/correcting English texts, and daily routine office work. Depending on skills, additional duties are possible. Requirements: College degree or higher, good knowledge of German and willingness to improve, good command of written English, computer skills, willingness to do routine office work about one-third of the time, ability to work independently and in a team. Strong interest in (and good basic knowledge of) at least one of the following topics: global warming, global governance, north-south politics, WTO, financial markets. www.germanwatch.org
