PROJECT DESCRIPTION

The IFOR Intern is involved in communications, publications and outreach for both IFOR in general, and the Women Peacemakers Program. Re-writing communications with IFOR world-wide membership for the IFOR publications (printed and electronic).


SPECIFIC TASKS for Publications

Prepares the first draft of material to be used for the electronic newsletter IFOR in Action and for other IFOR printed publications. As part of this work, the intern:

  1. collects information from emails, magazines, and other sources that come under the sections of: News, Regional News, Calendar, Resources;
  2. corresponds with authors, photographers, and others in the IFOR network;
  3. is responsible for adding material to the graphics library for use in all publications;
  4. Organizes all logistics involved with sending out publications including but not limited to: database-related tasks, printing labels, arranging for printing and mailing or shipping;
  5. Responsible for subscription fulfillment and sending reminder letters to subscribers;
  6. Participates in the marketing of IFOR publications;
  7. Participates in further development and/or improvement of IFOR's electronic publications


SPECIFIC TASKS for Women Peacemakers Project (WPP)

Carries out support tasks in coordination with the WPP staff.

  • Computers: helps with trouble shooting, possibly manages Website;
  • Translations: does translations, if possible, of correspondence and publications;
  • Email: monitors email to general office address (office@ifor.org);
  • Filing: keeping the files up-to-date, especially for the IFOR branches, groups and affiliates;
  • Good computer skills: ability to work with the following software programs: WordPerfect, Pagemaker, and Excel; ability to work with the email programs Microsoft Outlook as well as other internet-related skills;
  • Very good English language reading and writing skills;
  • Other language skills (French, German, Spanish) are a plus;
  • Interest in publication work and alternative media;
  • Interest in the power of active nonviolence a must!

This internship offers an opportunity to work in an international setting, enhancing journalistic, communication and information technology skills, working on a day-to-day basis with people committed to building a culture of nonviolence, and learning about what shape that commitment takes, in more than 45 countries where IFOR member organizations operate.


General Comments
The volunteer is an active member of the IFOR staff, participates in staff meetings and does a share of regular staff tasks: this includes, but is not limited to dealing with mailing and postage (including stuffing envelopes for large mailings); taking minutes for staff meetings; photocopying; sending faxes; and running errands (to copy shop or post office, for example).


POSITION
Full-time (5 days / week). Progam-wise, approximately 70% of time is spent working on general IFOR activities, 30% with the Women Peacemakers Program. Taskwise, the work will be 70% on publications and 30% on office-related tasks and computers.

Please note: Assignments at the project will depend on the individual skills of the volunteer and the needs of the project. Therefore the specific work may vary from the job description.
