Refugee Resettlement
adjusting to life in a new culture

  Sponsorship

The responsibilities of a sponsor are the following:

  1. Meet and welcome the refugee(s).
  2. Provide for initial basic needs such as food and housing.
  3. Provide minimum clothing.
  4. Assist the refugee in finding employment.
  5. Obtaining English classes for the refugee, if needed.
  6. Taking the refugee to the local county health department for a medical examination.
  7. Assisting the refugee in applying for a Social Security card.
  8. Enrolling any children in the refugee family in public school.
  9. Making every effort to see that the refugee does not use public welfare assistance.
  10. Complete and return a 90-day follow-up form which will be mailed to you from this office.

IT IS OUR EXPECTATION THAT A SPONSOR WILL ASSIST THE
REFUGEE FOR A PERIOD OF NOT LESS THAN 3 MONTHS
OR UNTIL THE REFUGEE IS SELF-SUFFICIENT.
