When we gather — two or three or two or three thousand, we are gathering on land that belonged to Native Americans. To understand our history, as a denomination and as a nation, we have to recognize we began by claiming a place that belonged to others. It is a complex story about how one group seeking freedom took away the freedoms of another group. A story of how race is created and of oppression and injustice.

Greensboro, the site of this year’s Conference, is a few hours from Cherokee, NC — a place that is at once a sacred homeland for the Cherokee tribe, a place of modern cultural rebirth, and a tourist destination. It is a place where layers history and a modern American dream collide. Join us on Scripture inspired tour of a region to reflect on how our values — and those of our ancestors — have shaped the lives of Native Americans.
