Job Descriptions

Human Solutions has been helping homeless and low-income families build pathways out of poverty since 1988. Our 245-mile service area, in outer East Portland and East Multnomah County, includes some of the highest poverty neighborhoods in Mulnomah County. Last year, we helped over 9,000 households avoid having their utilities shut off and remain warm and safe in their homes by providing utility assistance.

Human Solutions seeks a Volunteer Energy Program Specialist who will screen people for eligibility and complete applications for our Energy Assistance Program. This position is very high-paced and works with a multi-cultural population. Often, the number of people in need of assistance is much greater than available funding and capacity allows. People seeking assistance may be in very stressful situations, and an ability to de-escalate tense situations is necessary. However, the position is also very rewarding for people who enjoy helping a diverse community as well as working in a multi-cultural, supportive, and always interesting environment.

Minimum requirements include: demonstrated punctuality and dependability; attention to detail; computer literacy, including experience with Microsoft Excel, Access, Word, and Outlook; knowledge of social and economic issues creating poverty; and the ability to work successfully with practices and techniques related to people with low income in order to achieve greater self-sufficiency. The volunteer should also possess the ability to work effectively under pressure and to manage, organize, and prioritize many diverse and concurrent activities and responsibilities, the ability to work well in a multi-cultural environment and be culturally sensitive to diverse client populations, and the ability to communicate effectively in oral and written English. Fluency in Spanish, Russian, Vietnamese, or another language common to the service population is preferred but not required.

This project is connected to a Community House.
