Heifer International's mission is to work with communities to end world hunger and poverty and to care for the earth. Heifer Ranch is the largest of Heifer’s three US-based learning centers. Heifer International's mission is to work with communities to end world hunger and poverty and to care for the earth. Heifer Ranch is the largest of Heifer’s three US-based learning centers. All volunteers play a part in experiential education that inspires, challenges, and engages people to take action in Heifer’s mission. Volunteers work with people of all ages from diverse backgrounds, live on-site in our intentional community with 30 other volunteers, and are passionate about causes such as education, the environment, sustainable food production, peace and justice, and women’s empowerment.
All volunteers are trained to assist with school field trips and daily livestock chores but are also assigned to one of four areas:
(A) Education Volunteers work with group facilitation and challenge course initiatives. They lead educational activities, hands-on classes, and overnight programs in our Global Village with mostly youth participants.
(B) Livestock Volunteers oversee daily livestock feedings, conduct animal well-being checks, lead components of educational programming, assist with fencing repairs, and participate in routine livestock work including breeding, birthing, and rotational grazing.
(C) Farmer Chef Volunteers participate in the full spectrum of farm- to-table activities. They spend part-time with meal preparation and food preservation in our dining hall and part-time farming in a variety of gardens, including a 5-acre organic CSA as well as cultural gardens within each site in the Global Village.
(D) Guest Operations Volunteers greet visitors at the visitor center, give tours, answer phones, work in the gift shop, manage data entry, participate in outreach events, and help with administrative and capacity- building projects.
Volunteers should possess a clear understanding of and appreciation for the mission of Heifer International and must complete required training on and uphold all Heifer policies and procedures. Other requirements include the ability and willingness to work with school and congregational groups, the ability to communicate clearly and effectively, excellent customer service and people skills, patience, a friendly ‘can-do’ attitude, and the ability to serve as an effective team member and work cooperatively and positively with a diverse group of guests and co-workers. Volunteers should be willing to work outdoors during inclement weather, to work hard and get dirty, and to share a room and housing in community with a diverse group of volunteers.
