How do you know when God is calling?

It truly was a dark and stormy Friday night at the end of January last year (2011). Larry was doing his usual crossword puzzles on the floor and I shouted from the library to come and read an email we just received. It was from a couple who are members of the American Committee for the World Friendship Center. They have the responsibility to find directors for the World Friendship Center, a Japanese organization that is dedicated to fostering friendships between nations to promote world peace and nuclear weapon disarmament located in Hiroshima, Japan. Would we be interested?

Okinawa Peace Prize nomination

The Okinawa Peace Prize is aimed at recognizing efforts of individuals and organizations contributing to the promotion of peace in the Asia-Pacific region geographically and historically related to Okinawa. As volunteer directors of the World Friendship Center we nominated Hiromu Morishita for the Okinawa Peace Prize. His story begins in 1945 when he survived the A-bomb in Hiroshima.

Peace is friendship building

The World Friendship Center (WFC) in Hiroshima, Japan celebrated its 46th birthday on August 6, 2011. Barbara Reynolds, the founder of WFC, strongly believed that if we could foster friendships between the peoples of the world the horror of the dropping of the Atomic bomb would not be repeated ever to any people of the world. A key to Peace is building friendships worldwide and developing those friendships as well as fostering connections. Forty-six years ago that was a goal. How does that goal play out today?

Ringing the Peace Bell

August 15th is a commemoration of the beginning of Peace in 1945. The horrors of the war in the Pacific for many nations were put behind them. In Hiroshima at the Peace Memorial Park on August 15, 2011, the day began with a gathering of The Hiroshima Association of United Nation Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization, (UNESCO) members, guests, citizens and visitors to the park. A similar ceremony is duplicated in Tokyo, Nagasaki, and other cities throughout the world.
