History:    The On Earth Peace Conference, as the founding assembly was called, took place at New Windsor, Maryland on December 20, 1974, with thirty-three persons attending.  "On Earth Peace Conference" (OEPC) was later called "On Earth Peace Assembly" (OEPA).  It grew out of the vision of M.R. Zigler of having the Church of the Brethren implement the message that came at the birth of Jesus, "On earth peace and goodwill among men."  OEPA has held assemblies, conferences, and smaller meetings of vocational groups.  A book store, with emphasis on peace materials, was opened at New Windsor in 1980, and later considerably enlarged.  A number of monographs have been published.  A series of "academies," beginning in August, 1982, have been conducted to assist young people in thinking about their relationship to government and their position on military service.   In August, 1981, it was incorporated as an independent body.  In September, 1982, On Earth Peace Assembly became affiliated with the World Ministries Commission of the Church of the Brethren.   The OEPA office is located at the Brethren Service Center, New Windsor, Maryland.

Description of the Records:  The records consist of correspondence, conference records, committee records, speeches, and minutes.  A major portion of the records consist of M.R. Zigler's correspondence.  Some of the records predate the founding of On Earth Peace Assembly and consist of information about M.R. Zigler's colleagues and friends, and about projects in which he was interested, and planning which he promoted.  There are also records about the Brethren Fellowship House in Elgin, Illinois, and about mental and general hospitals in which Brethren personnel were involved.  Sub-series were formed for Correspondence, Vocational Groups, and Hospitals.
