History: Judith Beery Garber was born in 1897, a daughter of Adaline Hohf Beery and William Beery in Huntingdon, Pennsylvania. Later her parents both worked in the Brethren Publishing House in Elgin. In Elgin she met Isaac N. Garber whom she married in 1917. They had two children, Dennis Garber and Virginia Garber Blickenstaff Crane. Judith lived in Elgin until Isaac’s death. Judith then lived in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, for a short while before moving to San Francisco, and then Mill Valley, California. In California, she worked several years for Standard Oil before retiring in 1976. It was also there that she carried out the bulk of the correspondence contained in these records. Judith died in 1987.
Description of the Records: These records deal with the compiling of the book Beery Family History and the continued collection of information for future revisions. The records contain correspondence, charts, family documents, newsclippings, indexes, and meticulous records formed from the information gathered. Although some of the earliest of these papers were gathered by Mrs. Garber’s father, William Beery (who was co-author of the book), the majority of the records were collected by Mrs. Garber. Though the records include some correspondence gathered by Mr. Beery during the first half of the 20th century, the majority are a record of Mrs. Garber’s activity from about 1957 through the early 1980s.
They have been divided into 14 subseries. There are files in each which might also have fit into one of more other subseries, but they remain as Mrs. Garber subdivided them. Some of the names of the subseries have been provided by the processor and may not accurately reflect Mrs. Garber’s use of them.
The first subseries is that of numbered files for the Beery and Hunsaker families. These contain handwritten charts of several lines of these two families.
Subseries two is labeled “Beery Family History” (BFH) and includes information gathered when this history was written as well as records concerning their publication and distribution. This subseries also includes information collected by and about William Beery, Judith’s father and co-author of the book.
The next five subseries are of correspondence. Judith had them separated as follows: Subseries three—“Post Book Lines” (Meaning information she collected after the book was published and therefore not included in it); subseries four—unrelated; and subseries five, six and seven have been simply numbered sets 1, 2, and 3 because, though Mrs. Garber had kept them as distinct sets of files, the processor could not determine what characteristics made them separate sets.
Subseries eight deals with the family sets of information. They were sometimes labeled “family,” sometimes “genealogy.”
Subseries nine contains genealogical organizations to which Mrs. Garber belonged or with which she corresponded.
The tenth subseries contains general information which did not seem to fit the other categories.
Subseries eleven contains generation charts which give detailed numbered information generation by generation of the Nicholas Beery Familly through the 8th generation.
Indexes comprise the twelfth subseries. These consist of file cards on which the material she had collected are indexed by family line, geographic location, correspondent names, etc. They also include an index for the Fellowship of Brethren Genealogists newsletter.
Subseries thirteen consists of calendars on which are noted dietary and health information.
The fourteenth subseries, also on file cards, is similar to subseries two in content. This subseries contains lists pertaining to the distribution of the Beery Family History, including owners, both individuals and libraries.

Separations: Photographs of the Black Rock Church in Pennsylvania were placed with congregational photographs. Photographs of people known to be Brethren were added to portrait files. Other photographs were placed in envelopes and allowed to remain in their original files. Genealogical newsletters were removed and checked against our holdings and added when needed. Form letters from genealogical societies were discarded. Greeting cards were discarded unless they contained handwritten messages. Brethren periodicals were added to BHLA collections or discarded. Brochures pertaining to Juniata and Manchester Colleges and to Hillcrest Home were added to BHLA collections for these institutions.
The original gift from Mrs. Garber’s heirs included a collection of books, newsletters, and a small amount of memorabilia. These have been dealt with as separate library collections apart from the archival processing of her papers. The gift also included the written permission to photocopy the book Beery Family History when patrons request it.
A card index to The Hufford Family History (by Franklin P. Hoffert) was transferred to the computer and hard copy. The card index was discarded.
