BRIEF DESCRIPTION: Bethany Sanitarium and Hospital, renamed Bethany Brethren Hospital in 1962 and Bethany Hospital in 1978) opened in 1921, with a second structure built in 1930. In 1930 it opened a school of nursing. Although it maintained close ties to the Church of the Brethren, the 1941 Annual Conference recommended that the hospital remain independent but be held in trust for the church. In 1968 Bethany merged with the Garfield Park Community Hospital (originally called Garfield Park Hospital) and became known as Bethany Brethren-Garfield Park Hospital, with two locations. When it became necessary to build a new building, it was done as a joint venture with the Evangelical Hospital Association, a health-care system of the United Church of Christ.
