This year’s storm season included the largest and most destructive tornado outbreak ever recorded. The “2011 Super Outbreak” spawned an unprecedented 336 tornadoes that ripped through 21 states April 25-28 and claimed 346 lives. The tornado that struck the Arab, Alabama area was rated an EF4 (winds up to 200 mph) and was on the ground for 50 miles. Many homes were swept off their foundations.

Brethren Disaster Ministries is responding with volunteer teams to replace roofs and completely rebuild homes that were destroyed. This project is starting in late November 2011.

Housing

Volunteer housing for this project is in a large converted building in the town of Arab. The facility has ample space for up to 15 volunteers, with separate men’s and women’s sleeping areas, six bathrooms, a complete kitchen, and dining and living area. Volunteers need to bring their own bedding, pillows, towels, etc.

See photos of volunteer housing.

Meals

Meals are prepared in a fully equipped kitchen and shared in the dining area. Please note that volunteer groups are asked to include an assistant cook.

Work

The current caseload includes roofing and two new builds. It would be very helpful for each group to include at least a few skilled roofers and builders. Tools and project leadership are provided by BDM.
