Video conferences offer the ability to chat face-to-face with family and friends, either one-to-one or in a group. All you need to get started is a computer, webcam (many computers have cameras built in) and an internet connection.
Many search engines offer email for free; some also include other programs that might be useful in your church, such as sharing of calendars, documents, photos, articles, blogs, etc. Free to congregations with 50 members or less, "Excellerate is a complete church management system specifically designed for 'small group churches.'"
