Food for Thought
Henry Kurtz, a nineteenth century elder who printed the first Brethren encyclopedia in 1867, had an interest in the way that Quakers in London conducted their Yearly Meeting.
Many of the principles he observed at their gatherings provided a guide for the design of Annual Conference as we know it today.
Where and how do you see these values playing out in Annual Conference today?
The principles that he sought to preserve were:
- simplicity
- liberty
- order
- subordination of our reason to the Word of God
- due regard to the conclusions of former Yearly Meetings
- a sincere love of the Brethren
- a constant aim for union in the body of Christ
