The Denominational Deacon Ministry Cabinet plans and provides for training and resources about deacon ministry. Deacon groups have several opportunities for resources and future growth:

  • NEW! Deacon Ministry Training Events
ABC will hold five deacon ministry training events this spring. More will be available about these one-day deacon training events in the new year.

  • Other training events for deacons are offered during Annual Conference and in various district conferences on topics such as the four functions of deacon ministry, deacon spirituality, being a healing presence in divorce, supporting family life and love feast. In the coming year the deacon cabinet will give special attention to the whole-person imperative of providing care to the caregiver.

  • New Brochure Defines Deacon Ministry
“Called to be a Deacon in the Church of the Brethren,” is the title of a new brochure produced by the Denominational Deacon Ministry cabinet. The brochure fulfills a long-standing goal of the cabinet to have a resource that defines the vision, history and qualifications for deacons in the church. The brochure also is designed to attract younger adults to consider answering the call to be a deacon, stating that “there is no age restriction to being a deacon” and “any young, middle-aged or older adult of the congregation whose commitment to Christ and the church is evident in their living, stewardship and participation in the church” is eligible. The brochures can be ordered from ABC at (800) 323-8039.

  • A Denominational Deacon Luncheon is held each year at Annual Conference on Monday at noon. More than 150 deacons attend, a featured speaker gives a presentation and deacons have the opportunity to network with one another. Every year, attendees tell us that they greatly appreciate the opportunity to connect with other deacons. Download this PDF file describing ABC's plans for this year's Annual Conference.

  • Each issue of Caregiving, ABC's quarterly publication, is geared for deacons with themes that relate directly to deacon ministry. Also, two pages of each issue are for deacon ministry news, stories and organization issues from around the denomination. Deacon groups receive a special subscription rate.

  • Quarterly e-mails are sent to deacons wishing to receive updates about deacon news in the denomination. To join this list click here.
