Resolution Regarding War in Iraq
We, the undersigned faculty of Juniata College, are opposed to a pre-emptive attack on Iraq on both moral and practical grounds.
Morally, an attack on Iraq will likely result in the death and injury of innocent civilians, and our attack would make us guilty of the very thing we seek to preventdeath and injury to civilians for political purposes. Our attack would also risk legitimizing the principle that any country that claims it is being threatened by another country may mount a pre-emptive strike.
Practically, a pre-emptive strike risks lives, further destabilization of the Middle East, erosion of relationships with our allies, and increased resolve of our enemies around the world. None of these outcomes foster increased security for us and other countries. War in Iraq would also impose serious strains on America's currently week economy in terms of the costs of the war, as well as on post-war economic obligations.
For these reasons, and absent new evidence that drastically changes the present situation regarding Iraq, the undersigned faculty of Juniata College urge our elected representatives in Congress and the White House to oppose any pre-emptive war in Iraq.
(Signed by 51 members of the Juniata College faculty)
